Chef Art Gonzales has made quite a name for himself in the Long Beach culinary scene. Situated in an old Art Deco building on Broadway and Termina, sits Panxa (pronounced pan-zah – the Catalan word for belly). The menu draws inspiration from classic New Mexican dishes, like their Navajo Taco and Stacked Enchiladas. We recommend getting both the green chile and christmas salsa.
If you love Panxa, but think you want a seafood-centric brunch, head to Chef Art’s sister restaurant, Roe, in Belmont Shore. Try the Surf ‘N Turf Breakfast Sandwich, with a house made shrimp and pork patty, mizuna, kimchi aioli, sunny side-up egg, and brioche bun.
If Retro Row is more your pace, head to The Social List, next to the Art Theater. Sit outside on their new patio, and enjoy the magnificent people watching. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, we recommend the Peanut Butter French Toast Waffles. For all you savory people, go for the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict.
Long Beach’s newest sleepy Peninsula cafe is a millenial’s dream. But only in the best kind of way. Gather your trendiest brunch group, and snag a seat on the back patio, in front of the green wall. Spring for the Breakfast Tacos, or splurge on the Salmon Caviar Pizza. Just be sure to take a photo… or it didn’t happen.
If you haven’t been to downtown’s instant Levantine hit, AMMATOLI….now’s your chance. You’ll be transported to the Middle East (without the 14-hr flight), when you try Chef Dima’s shakshuka. Hands-down the best version you’ll find within driving distance. Don’t leave without ordering the Knafeh for dessert. Just trust us.
If you prefer to stay north of the 405, make your way to Rasselbock for an authentic German biergarten experience. Beer for breakfast? Yes. Also bottomless mimosas and house-made sangria. Order the Strammer Max, a classic German breakfast sandwich that comes with pretzel bread, topped with ham, cheese & fried. Or spring for one of their homemade sausages.
The Ordinarie has proven its worthiness in the Downtown Long Beach culinary scene (we see you Chicken Pot Pie Bites). This “American Tavern,” strives to elevate classic dishes with a modern twist. Start with the Tavern Scones with Lavender Cream and Seasonal Jam…then dive into their Breakfast Grits with slow cooked grits, applewood bacon, asparagus, mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes, a sunny side-up egg, and crispy shallots. Pair your breakfast with a cocktail. We recommend the French 1776: Earl Grey Infused Gin, Rye, Orange Bitters, Sherbet, Sparkling Wine.
If you’re still sad about the fact At Last Cafe closed…you won’t be once you’ve had brunch at Ellie’s. Chef Jason Witzl is a master in the kitchen, and it shows in his food. Some even say brunch is their best meal. Start with the Breakfast Rigatoni, served with a poached egg, truffle, bacon, aged parm and toasted breadcrumbs. It’ll make you rethink the way you look at breakfast.
