7 Unique Ideas for Mother’s Day in Long Beach

on May 7, 2019 | By Layla Ali-Ahmad

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Forget about those lame brunch buffets. Time to put your thinking caps on to make sure Mom feels special. Here’s a list of alternative activities in Long Beach to treat her to this year.

Go Whale Watching

The weather has been gorgeous lately. What better time than now to spend the day soaking in the sunshine while also doing a little whale watching? Isn’t it why we pay the big bucks to live here?! Check out Harbor Breeze Cruises to book your aquatic adventure. Mother’s Day happens to fall within Blue Whale season. Throughout the year, along with Gray and Blue Whales, you may also see Fin Whales, Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, and/or Killer Whales (Orcas). If you’re lucky, you’ll also spot dolphins darting in and out of the water.

Rent a Duffy Boat

If you like the idea of a boat, but you’re thinking Mom would like something a little more intimate check out London Boat Rentals to reserve an electric Duffy boat. You can even bring your own food, drink and music on board for an economic (but memorable) cruise through the Long Beach Marina and Naples Canals. Just be sure to pick your designated “driver” ahead of time (NOT IT!).

Take a Food Tour

Does Mom love Long Beach? Does she love food? Does she love spending time with you? Then it’s time to book your guided Beach City Food Tour of Downtown Long Beach. Tours start at 11:00am and run for 3 hours. You’ll visit 7 of Long Beach’s top eateries, while learning about the history, culture and architecture of the beautiful city we love to call home. Tickets start at $69. Visit the ticketing page for 15% OFF this Mother’s Day weekend.

Book a Day Tour of LA

Looking for something a little longer? Play like a tourist in LA with Sunseeker Tours. Book your 8-hour tour of Los Angeles for $119/person. All small group (up to 14 people) tours depart from Long Beach and cover the top SoCal hot spots: DTLA, The Colosseum, Hollywood Sign, Walk of Fame, Griffith Observatory, Santa Monica and Venice. Stop for lunch at Mel’s Diner on Sunset to try “Mel’s Famous Chili,” from the show, “Alice.”

Plan a Picnic in El Dorado Park

We get it… Sometimes we want to give Mom a memorable experience, without shelling out too much cash. In that case, try organizing a picnic in El Dorado Park. Entry is $8 on holidays. To reserve a picnic site, please call (562) 570-311. Bring your own bikes, or rent them on site to take advantage of the 4 miles of paved bike paths. Rent a pedal boat for an extra special treat. Just be sure to bust out your best cheese-board skills. We see you, Trader Joe’s.

Go Brewery Hopping in Bixby

Maybe mom is super into craft beer! If so, that’s AWESOME. Head down to Bixby Knolls… Cleverly referred to as “Brewery Knolls,” for its extensive selection of new breweries. Hop between Ambitious Ales, Dutch’s Brewhouse and Liberation Brewing Co., for some of the city’s best pints. Then make your way to Rasselbock for authentic Bavarian fare, or Steelcraft for a little more variety and beer.

Visit the Long Beach Museum of Art

You might want to think about taking Mom to see some local art. Make your way to the Long Beach Museum of Art. The waterfront location provides the perfect backdrop for a fail proof afternoon. Before checking out the museum, make reservations for an ocean-view brunch at Claire’s at the Museum. Don’t skip out on their breakfast cocktails and custom Bloody Mary menu. Because we think art is always better with a bit of a buzz. Just sayin’.

Now what are you waiting for? Go plan the perfect Mother’s Day!
