How One Local Foodie is Helping Expose Long Beach’s Culinary Growth to Visitors

"Before an intrepid 28-year-old local foodie sprang into action earlier this year, Long Beach had a culinary dilemma: how to give visitors a taste of more than just one of the city’s best eateries, in a traveler’s limited amount of time.

So, in August, Layla Ali-Ahmad launched Beach City Food Tours in hopes of creating such an urban excursion.

'I feel like Long Beach is a really underrated city and I feel like the food scene is really coming up,” said Ali-Ahmad, who has been living in Long Beach for the past six years. “There’s constantly new restaurants coming up and the caliber is getting better and better and I wanted to showcase that to people.'"

"Food tours are a great way of discovering the cuisine of a city. It’s even better when you can explore on foot. One of the area’s newest food walking tours is Beach City Food Tours offering a well-planned, highly informative and incredibly tasty Downtown Long Beach food and beverage tasting experience.

Beach City Food Tours has launched the first of its kind in Long Beach, a guided walking tour that offers residents and tourists alike the opportunity to taste and sip offerings from some of the city’s most popular eateries and food shops. Attendees experience Long Beach, a growing food lover’s city, through a unique sensory journey while learning about the city’s history, art and culture along the way. The tour is currently available for Downtown Long Beach, but will eventually expand to other parts of the city."

Meet Layla Ali-Ahmad of Beach City Food Tours in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Layla Ali-Ahmad.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Layla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in LA and grew up in Orange County. My parents both immigrated to Southern California from Lebanon in the late 70s due to an ongoing war in the country. My twin sister and I were raised in a full household with my parents, grandmother and several aunts who lived with us while growing up.

Beach City Food Tours: Q&A

"I recently joined founder and owner Layla Ali-Ahmad on one of her delicious tours in downtown. We stopped at some Long Beach staples such as George’s Greek Cafe and Pier 76 Fish Grill for a few of the best dishes. Quick stops for art and architecture were sprinkled among the other four tastings."

There was the perfect about of food and left us very satisfied at the end. There was a great mix of food from Greek to Italian to tacos and sweet to end the tour (plus more!). We will for sure do his again when we have friends from out of town!!

What started with an "opa!!" And ended with a melt in your mouth pie from the Pie Bar, Beach city food tours exceeded all of our expectations! I have been on a few food tours before in the states and abroad, what sets apart this tour is by far the people and stories our fantastic host Layla shared with us!

I went on this super fun food tour that was practically in my back yard. We went to a variety of restaurants and shops which I didn't even know about. The tour guide spoke about the history of Long Beach while we walked and tasted our way around downtown. I will be going back for another tour soon!!
